MESSAGE FROM THE EDITOR:

What began as the flu ended up as pneumonia and I've been pretty much out of commission since the middle of February. My apologies for the lack of new content on the site and for the delays in responding to emails the past week or so.  My health is much improved and I will be adding new content and catching up on emails in the days to come.

The Asheville Music Scene website is now two months old and growing fast.   In spite of a few technical glitches and the health battles of the site editor,  the website has received an overwhelmingly positive response.  It appear that folks are truly interested in reading about local music and local musicians and hungry for even more content.

The Asheville Music Scene website is poised to embark on the next phase of it's growth.  Thus far, the content on the Asheville Music Scene website has depended on the efforts of a single editor. Even before my recent health issues, it was a challenge for one person to keep pace with the volume of local music news.  But that's about to change.  As the website begins it's third month,  we are now actively soliciting articles, reviews, guest editorials, and other content from the community. I'll be sharing additional information about this new phase in life of the Asheville Music Scene website in the days to come.

Thanks again for all the great feedback concerning The Asheville Music Scene website. Our primary mission is to support the local musicians and music related entities in the Asheville area by serving as a news and information hub.

We encourage you to support live local music by going out to hear local bands as often as possible.

Balsam Range Teams With Tony Rice This Weekend
Band/Performer News
Thursday, 21 February 2008

In early 2007, five of the Asheville areas finest bluegrass pickers joined forces to form a true all-star bluegrass band called Balsam Range.   All five musicians were from Haywood County and all had a wealth of experience and a common vision for the sound they wanted to create,  and their sound gelled quickly.   On the strength of their individual musical resumes, big things were expected from the band.   But no one expected them to achieve their current level of success so quickly.  Although barely a year old, Balsam Range has garnered consistent high praises from bluegrass fans and from the media and performed a numerous festivals.

This weekends appearance at a local festival on the same bill with the top names in bluegrass music today is a fine honor and perfect cap to the inaugural year for Balsam Range.

balsam_range.jpgBalsam Range will appear as one of the headline acts at this weekends Bluegrass First Class Festival at the Crown Royal Plaza resort here in Asheville NC.   They share top billing with stellar bands including Rhonda Vincent and the Rage, J.D. Crowe and the New South, IIIrd Tyme Out, Michael Cleveland and Flamekeeper, and Doc Watson.

As a special treat, Balsam Range will perform with bluegrass legend Tony Rice on Saturday February 23rd.   Tony Rice is perhaps the most influential guitar player in the past 4 decades of bluegrass music. His appearance and performance with Balsam Range will certainly be a highlight of the festival.

tonyricelogo.jpg Widely acclaimed as one of bluegrass music's true stylistic innovators, and perhaps the greatest acoustic flat-picked guitarist since Clarence White, Tony Rice has a distinctive style of playing which countless young musicians have attempted to emulate for the past 30 years. He is a master flatpicker of traditional acoustic bluegrass but also helped create the newgrass and jazz grass sounds of more recent years.

LEAF International Teams with David Lamotte
General Interest
Sunday, 17 February 2008

david_lamotte_small.jpgDavid Lamotte believes music can make a difference in the world.  Believing it is one thing, but David put his belief into practice in 2004 when he and his wife Deanna founding PEG Partners (Proyecto para las Escuelas Guatemaltecas) , a program to take music into the schools in Guatemala.   LEAF International was founded on a similar prinicple, believing that the Lake Eden Arts Festival could impact the world by working in selected countries to bring music to kids.    Now the two organizations are working together in Guatemala to accomplish their mission.   David LaMotte and LEAF Staffers Sarah & Celeste just returned from a fantastic voyage to El Tejar GUATEMALA in January.

Seeing the music programs in action and meeting the kids Sarah wrote, "it was the BEST day of her life"! Celeste felt that "The music program has had a profound impact on these children's lives. Coming to school a couple hours a day to PLAY MUSIC is what these children look forward too." David LaMotte, "The NEEDS ARE HUGE, of course, but we believe that SMALL CHANGES MATTER, and that through BUILDING relationships and BEING PERSONALLY PRESENT and involved with each project WE CAN MAKE small changes that are MEANINGFUL."

LEAF International is a non-profit collaborative outreach program that matches youth globally with instruments and mentors, empowers youth through music, arts, and by connecting to their cultural traditions.  Current projects are located in Rwanda, Guatemala, Mexico, Panama, and Bequia.
